A square recipe is a table: ingredients stay in rows, and each process consumes whole cells until the finished dish fills the last column.

Read left to right like a cooking bench. When an ingredient waits while something else happens, the gap is a pass-through — the same cell continuing, not a new step. Combine neighbouring uncombined cells to grow the square.
